Where engineering meets people: the origin of LEVANTIS

LEVANTIS was born where many important engineering decisions take place: at the crossing of paths.

Our journey began in the field of level crossings, one of the most representative subsystems in railway safety. A level crossing is not only a technical element within signalling: it is the point where the railway system interacts directly with the human environment.

Vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and real operating conditions converge at the same point in the system. In this context, safety does not depend solely on control logic or compliance with technical requirements, but also on how people perceive and interpret signalling, how they react to visual or acoustic indications, and what situations may occur under non-ideal conditions.

Unlike other signalling elements located along open track, level crossings require simultaneous consideration of:

  • human behaviour
  • visibility and understanding of indications
  • reaction times
  • condicionants de l’entorn
  • environmental conditions
  • mechanical consequences of unintended use

This context requires engineering to be approached from a broader perspective, where safety is the result of coherence between technology, operation and human behaviour.

The founders of LEVANTIS participated in the design of some of the first electronic level crossings implemented in Spain during the 1990s, at a time when systems were transitioning from relay-based technology to programmable electronic architectures. This evolution improved diagnostic capability, maintainability and system reliability, marking the beginning of a progressive technological transformation in signalling.
Later, this experience expanded to international projects

Later, this experience expanded to international projects, contributing to solutions deployed in different operational environments, including:

  • Denmark – ERTMS L2 BL3
  • Egypt
  • Romania
  • Cuba
  • Turkey

Each country introduces different technical, operational and regulatory constraints, reinforcing the idea that signalling engineering must adapt to the real operational context while maintaining system coherence.

Over time, activities expanded towards other signalling, validation and railway safety subsystems, but the origin continues to define our way of working.

For this reason, we chose the name LEVANTIS:

LEVel crossings and Advanced New Technologies for the Innovation on Safety

A name that reflects both our starting point and our technical vision: applying new technologies with engineering judgement to contribute to the safe evolution of railway systems.

This blog aims to share technical knowledge, explain real engineering challenges and provide a structured perspective on the evolution of railway signalling and safety systems.

Because ultimately, railway safety does not depend only on technology, but on how that technology integrates into the real environment where people interact with the system.
